Chapter 8
Jennifer
A couple months later
I clear my throat and speak up. “If I may.”
The entire conference room looks at me, but none of them make my heart skip more than Ian. I glance over at him sitting next to me, but he’s just looking on with a tiny smile on his lips. He’s been looking at me like that since I started working for him. It’s a mix of pride and fascination. It’s not mystery between us that we’re smitten with each other. We’ve been exchanging knowing glances and dropping teasing comments toward one another for the last couple months. Sometimes it’s hard to keep focused at work, but Ian always manages to be a shrewd businessman whenever he needs to be. And right now he needs to be because we’re trying to sell one of the biggest projects of the year. Ian and I both flew to San Francisco to win this account.
“I think we should go with the Blue Campaign. It may not have the broadest reach, but it connects with your target demographic the best. After the launch, the word of mouth and viral online campaign will essentially be free advertising. I can have more detailed reporting to you by the end of the week, but the numbers suggest the revenue will have upwards of a twenty percent increase by the fourth quarter.”
I look around the conference room to see the CEO nodding his head in agreement. I peek over at Ian to see his smile growing a little bigger.
“Mr. Harrington?” The CEO looks over at Ian for further confirmation.
“It’s not my original preference, but I certainly trust Ms. Beck’s judgement. Afterall, she is more knowledgeable in this area than I am.” Ian says, looking over at me with that knowing smile.
“Very well. When can you have the campaign ready?”
“By July.”
“Perfect.”
Before I know we’ve all shaken hands and Ian and I are already in the company car headed back to the hotel. It was a late meeting, so it’s dark by the time we get back to the hotel.
“You know, not very many people go against my opinion.” Ian says as we walk into the hotel lobby. His hand brushes against the small of my back as he leads the way. The touch sends tingles up the back of my neck. I want more, but I’ve worked hard to remain somewhat professional throughout the last couple of months.
We stop underneath the giant, ornate chandelier above us. “Would you rather me lie?”
“Are you even capable of lying?” He laughs.
I’ve been trying to keep my serious face on, but when he laughs I always feel warmth flood throughout my body. Why does he have to be so damn handsome all the time.
“Maybe.” I say with a nonchalant shrug.
Ian shakes his head. “You’re so fiercely honest. You cut through bullshit like a laser. You even cut through my bullshit.”
“That’s what you hired me for, right?” I can’t help but chuckle with him.
“Yep.” Ian looks me up and down as his tongue subtly runs across his lips.
